ISO 9001 is a standard that sets out the requirements for a quality management system. It helps businesses and organisations to be more efficient and improve customer satisfaction. A new version of the standard, ISO 9001:2015, has just been launched, replacing the previous version (ISO 9001:2008).
ISO 14001 is a standard that sets out the requirements for an environmental management system. A new version of the standard, ISO 14001:2015 now replaces the previous version (ISO 14001:2004).
OHSAS 18001 is a standard that sets out the requirements for a health & safety management system. The 2007 version remains unchanged.
Why has the standard been revised ?
All ISO standards are reviewed every five years to establish if a revision is required in order to keep it current and relevant for the marketplace.
What are the major differences ?
ISO 19001:2015
- The most noticeable change to the standard is its new structure.
- Greater focus on leadership.
- ISO 9001:2015 now follows the same overall structure as other ISO management system standards (known as the High-Level Structure), making it easier for anyone using multiple management systems.
- Another major difference is the focus on risk-based thinking. While this has always been part of the standard, the new version gives it increased prominence.
ISO 14001:2015
The key changes relate to:
- Increased prominence of environmental management within the organisation’s strategic planning processes.
- Greater focus on leadership.
- Addition of proactive initiatives to protect the environment from harm and degradation, such as sustainable resource use and climate change mitigation.
- Improving environmental performance added.
- Lifecycle thinking when considering environmental aspects.
- Addition of a communications strategy.
What benefits do the new versions bring?
- Puts greater emphasis on leadership engagement.
- Helps address organisational risks and opportunities in a structured manner.
- Uses simplified language and a common structure and terms, which are particularly helpful to organisations using multiple management systems, such as those for the environment, health & safety, or business continuity.
- Addresses supply chain management more effectively.
- Is more user-friendly for service and knowledge-based organisations.
